In 1951 Hacham Naftali Karshi left his hometown with his wife Marussa and their son Goel and moved to Jerusalem, Israel. They left a prosperous comfortable life behind and chose to live in Jerusalem which was then experiencing a difficult time of food rations. Hacham Karshi learned the art of jewelry-making from his parents and continued to work as a silversmith and metal mould-maker here in Jerusalem. He apprenticed with the German born silversmith Hans Tefich for three years and then received an Israeli diploma of silversmith-craft and fine jewelry making.
Hacham Naftali established his own silversmith-workshop in the Mamila neighborhood next to the old-city walls of Jerusalem. Soon the original brass artwork created by Hacham Naftali Karshi became a popular merchandise among the jewelry-store owners. His designs for Chanuka Menorahs were different and unusual and were a welcome new sight in the existing world of Judaica styles.
Hacham Naftali continued expanding his line of high quality products and started making 24 karat gold and silver-plated items. Store-owners and customers admired his products and Karshi became a brand-name. Hacham Naftali passed the love of silversmith work to his children.
The brothers joined their father in his workshop during their school's summer vacation and became skilled workers of fine metal work. The young Karshi generation contributed their share to the advance of the Karshi Co.
They went to college and studied professional fine-metal work. They brought in new technologies and high-tech production techniques. The combination of modern and traditional styles together with reasonable prices were a winning strategy.
Today, a lot of thought is invested in creating the Karshi designs and a variety of materials are used in making Karshi products. Customers can recognize the unique look of the Karshi artifacts and request a Karshi original!
The original Karshi workshop by the old-city walls started with brass products. Today production techniques and the choice of materials have expanded. Look closely at Karshi products and you will notice that special spirit of Jewish history with that special Karshi touch.
